about
As I drove north on I-5 moving a state - and a world - away from everything I knew, I thought about my ancestors who came to America under much different circumstances. I wrote this song to honor them and their journey and sacrifice - everything they did that brought me to where I am today.
lyrics
Ocean Voyage
Copyright Nov 1997 Mich Lewis
You sailed across the ocean in the belly of a ship
The clothes upon your back and a suitcase for the trip
Little Ann and Joe died along the way
Sailing was a risky business in those days
Am I a coward ‘cause I’m just as scared as you?
Were you this lonely when you started over too?
It’s nothing like your ocean voyage decades ago, but we both left everything to find a home
I sail down this highway guided by an autumn moon
You traveled weeks, but I’ll be through this mountain pass real soon
I wonder how you felt. Are you watching over me?
Did you go for what you’d find? Or for what you’d leave?
Am I a coward ‘cause I’m just as scared as you?
Were you this lonely when you started over too?
It’s nothing like your ocean voyage decades ago, but we both left everything to find a home
I never saw your picture, don’t even know your name
But your ocean voyage is why I’m here today
Thank you for the courage that blew you across that sea
I hope that blood runs true and you passed it down to me
Am I a coward ‘cause I’m just as scared as you?
Were you this lonely when you started over too?
It’s nothing like your ocean voyage decades ago, but we both left everything to find a home
To find a home To find a home
