Breath of winter through my T-shirt
Clouds are drifting in
Leaves of amber burning crimson
Autumn is here again

I hear the geese drawing near
Then watch them disappear
An urge to follow where they’ve gone
Past the horizon

Air like a splash of snowmelt water
Shock and tinglin’
Stirs my spirit, summer drowsy
Wide awake again

I hear the children laugh and play
Soon shed their childish ways
Someday like geese they’ll one by one
Cross the horizon


What have I done with what I’m given?
Where do I go from here?
Seems I always ask these questions
At this time of year

And as my summer slips away
Will I earn the right to say
I did the best I could
I left behind some good?

Kaleidoscope through colors and then fall
The forest moves to heed the winter's call
Last year’s success and failure spiral down
Like memories to scatter on the ground

I feel the winter beckon too
So many branches I'd like to renew
My colors drift, spent feathers from a wing
And the winter buds await the voice of spring
